Meet the Team

Sharon Brown, Director

Sharon has spent over 25 years working across the youth policy and youth homelessness agendas with local authorities, the Third Sector and importantly,  young people; encompassing project management, operational planning, strategic leadership and management, policy implementation and research.  Her previous roles have included Youth Adviser at Government Office North East, consultant on Targeted Youth Support with the Training and Development Agency, Development Lead for Foyer Federation in the North East and Yorkshire and Humber.

She is the founding member of the North East Homelessness Think Tank, a member of the North East Child Poverty Commission and North East Talent Match Programme Board and a Trustee at Streetwise North.

Kieran Platts, Regional Project Officerkieran

Kieran was appointed as Project Assistant in 2013 and was promoted to Regional Project Officer in 2015.  Kieran’s role is to promote and deliver YHNE projects to engage young people across the North East to facilitate them in having a voice to inform and influence responses to youth homelessness. Within his role Kieran works closely with the YHNE Regional Champions and wider partners at a local level to engage young people; and to promote innovation and best practice to inform local responses to youth homelessness

Kieran has lead on the ‘Home and a Job’ project looking at the changing life experiences of young people affected by homelessness as a result of the housing crisis, youth unemployment and welfare reform.  More recently Kieran lead the review of ‘The Youth Housing Charter’ through youth evaluation and the ‘Homes and Hopes’ project considering the implications of loss of the automatic entitlement to Housing Benefit for young people aged 18 – 25 years old.  He is currently delivering a participatory research project investigating the impact of Novel Psychoactive Substances (NPS also know as Legal Highs) on the lives of young people affected by homelessness and the projects seeking to house and support them.


Arron Williamson, Communications and Support Traineearron

Arron joined YHNE in 2015.  Arron administers all digital platforms for YHNE including the website, social media pages and monthly newsletter.  Arron works to raise the online profile of YHNE, linking in with partner organisations to raise awareness of the issues young people face. Arron also supports the YHNE team in delivering projects which engage young people across the North East.



Bonnie Brown, Youth Champion (Project Researcher)

Bonnie joined the team in 2017 as a Youth Champion (Project Researcher). Bonnie will be delivering sessions as well as being involved in all aspects of research; gathering and amalgamating data, identifying trends, disseminating recommendations to stakeholders. She is currently studying Sociology at Durham University.


Juan Franco Lechuga, Graphic Design Volunteer

Juan joined the team in 2016 as a volunteer and helps produce promotional material for YHNE. Juan studied Civil Engineering at the University of Granada (Spain) and is a specialist in Graphic Design. Juan has collaborated as a Graphic Designer for charities such as Cá and Kale dor Kayiko.

Here’s what Juan has to say about his role as a volunteer:

“Good design can change the world, or at least help nonprofits and social organizations in the process. I love what I do and the fact that I can help a well-deserved cause at the same time is just the cherry on top of the cake.”
