 Going Upstream Conference

There comes a point where you need to stop pulling people out of the river.  We need to go upstream and find out why they’re falling in.’  Desmond Tutu

The conference reviewed our work during 2013 including the implementation The Youth Housing Charter, young people reporting on the ‘Positive Images’ and ‘Home and a job’ projects and an overview of key findings from of the Youth Homelessness in the North East Survey. We reported back on findings of the independent evaluation of YHNE and set out priorities for 2014, hearing about work already underway.  Finally we wanted to ensure the Regional Youth Housing Strategy continues to address the  needs of young people in the North East through consultation on the day.

Our objectives for the day were to:

  • Bring together services that form part of the early intervention and prevention, as well as responses to youth homelessness, to share and consider.
  •  Review YHNE work and outline our next steps.
  • Present the current context, anticipated challenges and possible solutions for youth homelessness.
  • Provide the opportunity to consider local planning to end youth homelessness.
