Figures show early impact of benefit cuts for 18-21 year olds

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) have released ad hoc statistics on the number of 18 to 21 year olds who have been awarded and refused support for housing costs on Universal Credit (UC) since the automatic entitlement to housing costs in UC ended on 1 April 2017.

Key figures:

  • 96% of 18-21 year olds who applied for support for housing costs were awarded it.
  • 50% of claimants aged 18-21 awarded support for housing costs in UC had dependent children, which exempts claimants from the policy.
