How to help rough sleepers during severe weather conditions?

The North Tyneside Council has created a new Severe Weather Emergency Protocol (SWEP) that will be activated from the 1st of November until the 31st of March 2019. The aim is to help rough sleepers during the harsh autumn and winter months in the North East where their number increased by 13% in 2017.

The SWEP will be activated when the actual temperature is forecast to drop to zero degrees or below for three consecutive nights as well as high wind and heavy rain.  It will also include an emergency sit up at the Network Methodist Project on Oxford Street (Whitley Bay) available to anyone found to be rough sleeping or presenting as roofless.

How can I help?

Citizens can also contribute to help those people in need by reporting directly to StreetLink on 0300 500 0914 or visiting www.streetlink.org.uk. This information is then forwarded to the Housing Advice Team to investigate and verify the referral.  The public can also call 0191 643 2520 or email housingadvice@northtyneside.gov.uk direct to report a rough sleeper or suspected rough sleeping.
