YHNE Mental Health Survey

YHNE are passionate about ensuring that young people at risk of or who have experienced homelessness should have a voice and influence in changing policy and services to more adequately meet their needs and avoid homelessness occurring.

During 2016-17 we conducted participatory research with young people on the impact of Novel Psychoactive Substances (legal highs) on the lives of young people affected by homelessness.  The research highlighted young people’s use of NPS (with other substances) to deal with a range of mental and emotional health issues.

Within the homelessness sector it has long been acknowledged that mental health issues and multiple complex needs is increasing within those who present as and are accepted as homeless.  The YHNE 2017 Survey of Youth Homelessness in the NE for the first year in six years shows that mental health has overtaken ‘independent living skills’ and ‘education, employment and training’ as the key need amongst homeless young people.

YHNE would like to further explore the scale, nature and causes of poor mental health and what more could be done to help young people suffering from difficulties with their mental health.

Survey

As part of the Mental Health project, we will also be asking young people to complete a survey that we have developed. The survey is the first step in this project and will be a useful tool in showing the issues and challenges facing young people affected by homelessness.

The survey is now open, and we would appreciate the support of partners in encouraging young people to complete this survey. It will be included in this pack and there will also be an online version available here: https://northumbria.onlinesurveys.ac.uk/ypandmentalhealth

It is hoped that the survey will be a valuable tool in establishing young people’s experiences of mental health, who they turn to when they need support and what other support they find useful in tackling mental health difficulties.

The aim is to have the survey completed by the mid of December 2018.
