Youth Homelessness in the North East – Annual Survey 2017

The Homelessness Reduction Act has been lorded as an opportunity to remove obstacles in responding to homelessness; however, there are reservations in relation to local authorities and their local partners ability to respond adequately to a potential increase in demand for support and housing. At the same time welfare reform is continuing to impact on individuals ability to manage financially.  Local Housing Allowance levels, set below social rents will result in an increasing number of people who cannot afford to pay their rent, even if they are working.

The YHNE survey provides the only opportunity we have of gaining a more detailed picture of youth homelessness specific to the North East, however, it is dependent upon the number of responses we receive. We regularly have a good level of responses from local authorities; the ideal is to have responses from each of the twelve authorities in the region. Equally important, in order to achieve accuracy in levels and trends of youth homelessness, are the number or responses submitted by Third Sector partners and housing associations.

There are two surveys, one for local authorities and one for Third Sector providers and housing associations. Findings from the research will be analysed and a report covering trends, gaps and recommendations will be produced by Northumbria University. The report will be presented at a North East Homelessness Think Tank (NEHTT), Research into Practice Seminar, held in the autumn this year. Further details will be circulated nearer the time. The report will also be widely circulated and available to download on the YHNE website.

As with previous years to ensure comparative data is produced, the survey requests data for the month of February and across the previous year. To complete the survey please click on the appropriate link below. The links will take you to the survey and you will be directed through the process, once you have completed the survey please remember to press submit which will save your completed survey. Please remember not to press the submit button until you have completed the survey.

In order to ensure consistency of data, please can you ensure a single respondent for data coming from your local authority.

Please find below links for the surveys and pdfs so that you can review the questions in advance of completing the surveys. The surveys have a ‘finish later’ option too.

I would like to thank you for your continued support in completing the survey and forwarding on to colleagues and wider providers. Your participation ensures that in the North East we have a clear understanding of youth homelessness and the intelligence to inform future responses.

Please can you complete and submit the survey by close of play on Friday 28 July after which we will begin to collate responses. Thank you in advance for your participation.

Best wishes,
