‘Transitions’: Moving into your own place

A consultation with young people leaving Care

Transitions’ is moving from one place to the other.  For us and in this project, this is about stages in your life and young people moving from being in care to independence’.  YIF young researchers

Newcastle City Council is a member of a European research project seeking to improve outcomes for young people facing multiple-disadvantage with particular reference to improving their transitions to adulthood.  As part of the research project, a peer review of services for young people at risk of homelessness was conducted in Newcastle.  The report on the review made a series of recommendations.   Newcastle agreed to select one or two of the recommendations and to implement them between April and September 2012 with an evaluation carried out by Northumbria University.  The evaluation of the changes made will inform future strategy and commissioning arrangements locally, and where relevant will feed into policy and programme development at a European level.

One of the recommendations selected by Newcastle to progress was to address ‘transition planning’ ‘For those persons that have been in touch with the support system as a child, in particular care leavers, a strategy could be sought as to how the inevitable changes when entering adulthood can be met in a way that doesn’t lead to additional frustration, jeopardising previous success’

In order to progress this recommendation Newcastle City Council wanted to have a better understanding of the actual experiences young care leavers have in making the transition from the care system to living independently, focussing on the support they receive in relation to accessing, securing and maintaining a tenancy.

Youth Homeless North East  were asked to carry out a consultation with young people who had previously been ‘looked-after’ to explore their perceptions of support services available to them in moving to independent living and to produce a report summarising the findings.
